Sierra delivers full suite of circulation capabilities in a web browser and next-generation list functionality
Emeryville, CA—Innovative Interfaces, a leading provider of library automation software that empowers libraries globally, has launched Sierra Release 2.2, introducing new functionality that will streamline staff operations and enhance the end-user experience. Eagerly anticipated by many Innovative library partners, this release is already in use by more than 100 library systems throughout the world.
Sierra Release 2.2 targets key priorities for library partners, including scalability, reliability, security, and manageability, with feature improvements for cataloging, circulation, reporting, discovery, and resource sharing.
For ELNET Consortium, a consortium of national, academic, and public libraries in Estonia, the new functionality and improvements within Sierra have been truly beneficial for its member libraries. “Sierra’s breadth of capabilities and Innovative’s commitment to ongoing quarterly releases of Sierra, and to our strategic partnership, have been fundamental to our success,” said Riin Olonen, Development Manager at ELNET Consortium.
Leading the list of new developments in Sierra Release 2.2 is the delivery of all circulation functions in a web application. Originally introduced in Sierra Release 2.1, Sierra now brings the power and functionality of comprehensive public services workflows to library staff through a browser, with a full complement of technical services capabilities to follow later this year.
“Enabling the Sierra solution with web access is just another example of supporting our library partners with the flexibility to access their system on their preferred devices, from their preferred locations, whether that’s at the circulation desk, in the stacks, or an off-site storage facility,” said James Tallman, Chief Executive Officer at Innovative. “Our continued strong investment in web-enabled and mobile solutions demonstrates our commitment to enable our library partners’ flexibility in managing their operations for years to come.”
Key benefits for libraries adopting the Sierra Web Application include:
•The ability for staff to point browsers to a URL to access Sierra, without installing the Java-based Sierra desktop application on local workstations;
•Automatic updates for upgrades to new releases of Sierra;
•Flexibility for staff to access Sierra from virtually anywhere, without opening special ports, to reach a secure, stable network that is less susceptible to interruptions;
•Sustainable technology for reduced total cost of ownership, as IT staff no longer need to support Sierra installations on individual workstations.
In addition to expanded web access for staff, this release of Sierra also includes next-generation Create Lists capabilities. With an enhanced query builder, query conditions are now displayed in a more intuitive manner and support multiple terms with a target, as well as a new “IN” operator. This new model allows staff to perform more complex search strategies without slowing down list creation.
Other feature enhancements include additional support for internationalization, device and systems integrations, technical services capabilities and improvements to statistics to provide an optimized experience for staff running statistics in Sierra.
“Our product development strategy for Sierra is clearly an evolutionary strategy, which we find is in-line with library requirements. Enhancing functionality, while delivering on new technology adoption, makes libraries successful,” said Leif Pedersen, Executive Vice President, Products at Innovative. “This strategy aligns with an open architecture that serves to enhance the value of the library’s investment..
