Innovative Delivers New APIs and Operational Efficiencies in Sierra Release 3.0

 

Emeryville, CA—Innovative Interfaces, a leading provider of library automation software that empowers libraries globally, has launched Sierra Release 3.0 to deliver a streamlined user experience, greater operational efficiencies, and more robust integration across systems.

The latest release of Sierra demonstrates Innovative’s ongoing commitment to open systems for libraries, expanding an already robust set of RESTful APIs to improve library workflows. New endpoints in the patron API allow for placing holds of any kind (bib/item/volume), independent of the holds configuration in Sierra. This gives library partners flexibility to use alternative hold options when integrating with external services, without impacting the patron experience or automated workflows for holds placed directly from Sierra or Encore. Additionally, a new API endpoint for creating patron records is now available for key fields, including names, addresses, emails, phones, and PINs. This represents an important step toward providing create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) access to all fields in all relevant records via the RESTful APIs.

“The Sierra APIs have given us a lot of flexibility to work with other vendors,” said Maisam Nouh, Technology/Cataloging Librarian at The Ferguson Library in Connecticut. “The APIs automate data updates for our add-on solutions, which saves us time and ensures the information we need is always available.  Also, we have enjoyed working with the Sierra web application. Being able to test all of the updates and immediately use them has been a great part of the beta process. We like the vision for the Sierra web application, and look forward to using it more.”

In Sierra Release 3.0, the Sierra web application has been enhanced with usability improvements to streamline navigation, expand key commands, and simplify common actions for staff efficiency. Additional new features of Sierra Release 3.0 include:

  • Circulation: Support the option of item-level paging on locally available items. Staff will have additional printing options to satisfy local workflows.
  • Encore: Create up to ten custom facets to provide additional local options for users to refine search results.
  • Reports: Run Web Management Reports in browsers without plugins.

Beyond iterative improvements for staff, Sierra Release 3.0 marks a series of forward-looking releases for Sierra library partners, with a particular focus on the needs of library consortia.
