Emeryville, CA—Innovative Interfaces, a leading provider of library automation software that empowers libraries globally, has announced the adoption of a global standards framework in Vital, delivering advanced capabilities for interacting with image-based resources.
To provide libraries with a superior digital asset management solution, Innovative has become the first library vendor to offer a commercial repository that supports the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). This global standards framework ensures all image-based resources (images, books, maps, scrolls, manuscripts, musical scores, etc.) are delivered in a standard method to any user on the Web.
Built into Vital Release 7.0 and above, all metadata surrounding image-based resources has been standardized to deliver assets from compatible image servers and participating institutions. As a result, resources can be displayed, manipulated, and annotated in any application.
“Unique digital collections are central to the value that institutions bring to their communities, and must be handled appropriately. By adopting a standards framework and becoming IIIF compliant, all images within the institutions’ repositories can be viewed outside of Vital for greater discovery, with a uniform interface when comparing images from multiple sources.” said Leif Pedersen, Executive Vice President, Product at Innovative. “This is a game-changer for how libraries support digital scholarship, including research that depends on primary source material. Innovative is proud to partner with institutions throughout the world to deliver this type of access to specialized resources.”
In addition to supporting the International Image Interoperability Framework, Vital now delivers other enhancements, including:
•Integration of Mirador Viewer—Images can be displayed as a slideshow within the viewer, and advanced zoom capabilities are supported. Multiple images from other IIIF resources can be opened, with drag-and-drop capabilities enabled;
•Presentation API—All objects can be shared using a manifest file of existing metadata, which can be consumed by external IIIF viewers;
•Infrastructure Upgrades—With upgrades to Java, Spring, and Solr, Vital runs the fastest and most up-to-date versions of its software components for optimal performance and security.
“The power of Innovative’s digital asset management solution is quite impressive, and has allowed us to better engage patrons with our unique local history collections,” said Susan Rutherford, Technical Services Supervisor at Smyth-Bland Regional Library in Virginia. “Implementing Vital has instilled a greater sense of pride in our community, enhancing our patrons’ experience as they discover exciting information about their families and local heritage. Partnering with Innovative has increased our library’s visibility, and continued enhancements to Vital are highly appreciated.”
Vital is available worldwide for standardized viewing of any institution’s digital collection. As a standalone product in the Innovative portfolio, Vital can be used by Innovative library partners, libraries using another ILS, universities and colleges, city governments, or any other institution in need of a digital asset management solution.
