Integrating with the Campus Technology Environment

The Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is one of the most prestigious academic institutions in Korea. The University has an outstanding reputation for the use of computer technologies. For example, a recent development at POSTECH has been the implementation of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system to handle interactions with students in all their activities. This allows students to use their identification card to enter and exit secure buildings, log on to campus computing services, or announce their presence in a class.

To be an integral part of this technology environment, the University’s Tae- Joon Park Digital Library selected Millennium as its integrated library management system in 2005. With Millennium, the library will be the first in Korea to implement the complete suite of Millennium software along with a campus-wide “smart card” RFID implementation. This will allow students to interact with Millennium without barcodes to make circulation faster and easier for both students and library staff.

“The combination of Innovative's MetaFind, WebBridge, and Electronic Resource Management provides faculty and students with a one-stop gateway to information either held by the library or available anywhere electronically.”
—Dr. Sung Je Hong, Dean, Office of Academic Information, POSTECH

POSTECH’s student population also makes use of the Internet as a learning tool and as a way to connect with the University. The Millennium system fits well with this environment. For example, Millennium integrates seamlessly with Innovative’s Electronic Resource Management to make electronic subscription data available in real time to patrons using the online catalog.

Millennium also allows patrons to search several databases at once, sign in to subscription resources, and link to external websites relevant to their searches. “The ability to present an integrated digital library to patrons in any format is especially appealing,” says Dr. Sung Je Hong, Dean of the Office of Academic Information. “The combination of MetaFind, WebBridge, and Electronic Resource Management provides faculty and students with a one-stop gateway to information either held by the library or available anywhere electronically.”

Meeting the needs of today’s Net-savvy students is what Innovative is all about. That’s why academic libraries around the world like POSTECH rely on Innovative to help them remain an integral part of today’s digital university.
