Millennium's Cataloging is designed for ease and efficiency, without compromising functionality.
Database ManagementMillennium's Database Management programs give libraries full MARC record support, including cut, copy, and paste data within or between records. Entire records can be copied as well. Global update functions allow for changes to be made on many records at once, and can be used on all types of records, any fields. Records can be imported interactively or via batch files, and can be exported in MARC format. Online help is near at hand, including MARC tag help when editing records. Millennium provides record protection functionality that prevents one user's changes being lost because another user was editing the same record simultaneously. A wide range of special characters, diacritics, and non-Roman languages are supported, including:
Reference DatabasesIn addition to the main database, Innovative offers the capability to have a variety of additional databases. These include commercially-provided citation databases, community/campus information databases, and locally defined databases. Using a reference database is similar to using the library's main database. Once the database has been selected, the user is presented with a standard Web OPAC or character-based OPAC search screen. The library can restrict access to specified reference databases by the user's IP address, or by using the optional Web Access Management system. A few examples of the types of alternate databases supported: Commercial Citation DatabasesInnovative libraries support a variety of commercial citation databases, such as the Wilson Index to Legal Periodicals (WILP), Legal Resources Index (LRI), Expanded Academic Index (EAI), and EBSCO Masterfile. A great deal of flexibility is available to the library in the setup and maintenance of these databases. For some libraries, Innovative can provide the library with the periodic vendor-supplied updates, or the library can negotiate with the vendor and obtain the updates directly themselves. Community/Campus Information DatabasesLibraries can build databases of community and campus information targeted specifically at their users. The information may be stored in MARC Community Information Format, or in a simpler format, as the library desires. The database includes up to eight phrase indexes and one keyword index. Examples of these databases include information about community organizations, local events, and course catalog information. Locally-Defined DatabasesInnovative provides libraries with the opportunity to create custom databases. Many types of information can be stored in these, and staff maintain data in locally-defined databases separately from the library catalog. Data may be stored using Innovative field group tags or MARC tags, and retrieved from up to eight phrase indexes and one keyword index. Some examples of the data stored in locally-defined databases include records of newspaper articles, musical scores, photographs, special collections, and other archival material. Following are some local reference databases maintained by Innovative partner libraries: The Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine
Hong Kong Baptist University Library
San Jose State University
Consortium of Ozarks Libraries
Tulsa City-County Library System
Washington University
Wheaton Public Library
Hartford Public Library
University of North Texas
University of Maine
Bibliographic Utility InterfacesMillennium supports interfaces for all the major bibliographic utilities including OCLC (including CatExpress and PromptCat), RLIN, and Kinetica (formerly ABN), MARCIVE, as well as any Z39.50 source. In addition to having immediate access to their bibliographic databases, Millennium users can download records from bibliographic databases and union catalogs into their systems using Innovative's Bibliographic Utility Interfaces. Interfaces are also available for CD-ROM databases such as Bibliofile, OCLC CatCD, Books in Print on Disc, and LaserCat. Authority ControlMillennium's Authority Control functionality enables keying and updating of full MARC authority records, loading MARC authority records from files obtained via FTP or on tape, and performing global updates. Interactive heading and MARC code verification can be performed while editing bibliographic records. "Headings Change" reports not only provide information about the state of headings in the database, but also allow for correction of headings while viewing the reports online. The INN-View Library of Congress Authority Database provides seamless importation of LC Authority records. Automatic Authority Control processing corrects headings on bibliographic records without cataloger intervention when an authority record is changed or a new authority record is added to the database. Millennium automatically generates "see" and "see also" cross references from data within authority records and displays scope notes in the Web OPAC. Millennium Global Update makes Authority Control easy. Changing subjects,
names and uniform titles on groups of bibliographic records can be done
with a single command. MARC tags, indicators and subfield codes can be
changed independently or in conjunction with the headings themselves.
Changes can be made to entire fields, entire subfields or portions of
subfields. As with all of Innovative's products, all indexing is done
in real time, so there is no delay between when you make changes and when
staff and patrons benefit from them. |
