AMNH American Museum of Natural History

New York, NY

New York's prestigious American Museum of Natural History Library chose to replace its existing library automation system with Millennium. With a $2 million, five-year Mellon grant to develop a digital library especially for natural history materials, the museum is uniting its vast research and public collections, and integrating the digital library with traditional technical services.

The museum library decided that Millennium was the best system for this undertaking, not only because of its robustness and stability, but also because of the system's sophisticated image management features. The library also credited Innovative with a strong interest and enthusiasm to work with them to research experimental solutions applicable to museum collections.

The library was established in 1869 at the same time as the museum. Since then, it has grown into one of the world's great natural history collections, including over 450,000 volumes of monographs, serials, pamphlets, government documents, rare books and manuscripts, maps, and original illustrations. The Film Collection includes approximately 3,000 reels of film and 1,900 videocassettes. The Photographic Collection contains over 1,000,000 photographic images. The Archives contain over 1,600 linear feet of manuscript materials and approximately 1,300 reels of microfilm. The Art and Regalia Collection contains over 3,000 items, including sculpture, paintings, and memorabilia, and is constantly growing due to gifts and transfers from other museum departments.
