Denver, CO Denver Public Schools serves over 70,000 students enrolled in 125 schools. For the majority of schools, a single Library Media Specialist staffs the school’s Library Media Center. The Library Media Specialist is responsible for collection development, library instruction, and the day-to-day operation of the library. Library Media Centers are the hub of activity in schools with many Library Media Centers hosting classes every 30-40 minutes throughout the day. The Library Media Specialists’ primary function is library instruction. To decrease the amount of time a Library Media Specialist spends performing routine tasks such as checkout, some method needed to be implemented to relieve the Library Media Specialist of these more mundane, but still important, library functions. All of the modules were implemented with the goal of freeing up valuable instruction time. Innovative’s Graphical Self-Checkout module accomplishes this goal in a significant way. The Graphical Self-Checkout module provides students and employees with the ability to perform the most basic task of checking out an item. The Graphical Self-Checkout module is currently in use at elementary schools with students from grades two through five performing their own checkout. Designed for extreme ease of use, this module incorporates simple red-light and green-light icons to provide the convenience of self-check even for patrons who cannot yet read. Once enabled with an appropriate login, the program can simply be operated using only a barcode scanner. The ultimate goal for the Denver Public Schools Library Media Specialists was to get books into the hands of students quickly and efficiently. The majority of checkouts using the Graphical Self-Checkout module are performed without a problem, therefore the library’s goal of freeing the Library Media Specialist to focus on instruction rather than policing the Library Media Center collection has been realized. |
