Fort Lauderdale, FL

In December 2001, the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) and Broward County communities in Fort Lauderdale, Florida celebrated the arrival of NSU’s spectacular new Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, a state-of-the-art, $43 million joint-use facility that is certain to revolutionize education, research, and technology in South Florida and around the world.

Jointly created through the efforts of NSU and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the new library is reaching out to students from all walks of life, both young and old, traditional and nontraditional, local and global. It combines a public library, an academic library, auditorium, classrooms, and computer labs all in one building.

Construction for the five-story, 325,000 square foot building took fifteen months to complete, with costs split evenly between the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and NSU. With a capacity for 1.4 million volumes, it is Florida’s largest library, serving the students, faculty, and staff of NSU, as well as residents of Broward County. The building also includes a 500-seat performing arts theatre which features a satellite downlink for viewing transmitted productions, twenty electronic classrooms, 700 computer workstations, a children’s reading area and story room, multimedia and music listening rooms, 2,000 square feet of exhibit galleries, study and meeting rooms, and a café serving lunch, snacks, and beverages.

“This is a research and high-tech library like none other,” said Don Riggs, NSU Vice President for Information Services and University Librarian. “The library of tomorrow has arrived and everyone at NSU and in the county will benefit.”
