Mission Church, Santa Clara University Santa Clara University

Santa Clara, CA

Founded in 1851, Santa Clara University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of California and combines California's historical traditions with its entrepreneurial spirit. Situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, one of California's 21 historic missions is located on the campus. Santa Clara has been an Innovative library since 1992. Its integrated system includes holdings from the University (Michel Orradre) Library, and the Edwin A. Heafey Law Library, as well as materials held in Media Services. Santa Clara serves an undergraduate community of 4,400 full-time students, and a graduate community of about 2,300 full-time students, including nearly 900 students in the University's School of Law. Many of Santa Clara's graduate students are enrolled part-time, so the actual size of the population served is more than 3,100.

At the close of the last fiscal year, Santa Clara's libraries had a combined count of nearly 840,000 volumes, representing more than 475,000 individual titles. The libraries also have more than 8,700 active serial subscriptions, over 1,000,000 microform units, and nearly 8,000 A/V titles. The University Library is a selective depository for U.S. government documents and a California state document depository, with more than 540,000 documents. The University Archives include historic records of Mission Santa Clara, as well as a large collection of photographs and other materials documenting the history of Santa Clara University.

Santa Clara has a long history of partnership with Innovative Interfaces. The University was a beta test site for the Interlibrary Loan and Cataloging Workstation for Windows products and more recently became a participant in LINK+. This consortium of several public and private universities throughout California uses Innovative's INN-Reach software for direct, patron-initiated loans among member institutions. Requested items are then delivered by van, ensuring Santa Clara's faculty and students 2-3 day receipt of needed books.

Liz Salzer, Santa Clara's University Librarian, notes that: "I probably hear more positive comments about Innovative's Interlibrary Loan than any other service that the Library offers. Faculty especially love the convenience of making requests from their home or office computer, as they prepare class materials or work on their research activities. I've even had people break out of a lunch line to run up and tell me how great it is!"
