Istanbul, Turkey Sabanci University is a new private university located in Istanbul, which opened to its first group of students in October of last year. Millennium was chosen by the University as the library automation system for its impressive Information Center, and the system was installed in time for the start of the University's first academic year. Sabanci University was meticulously planned from the very start, and aims to become a global reference point for educational innovation. Being a key component in these plans, the right choice of library management software was vital. Ultimately, the University decided to install the full complement of Millennium modules, together with many of its special features, including Image Management products, Electronic Reserves, Materials Booking, Self-issue and an Oracle database management system. "We believe that Sabanci University, with its new physical environment, faculty, staff, and students, combined with the Information Center's facilities, information resources, and service philosophy, will become a world university. We also believe that the Millennium library system provides us with an excellent window to access the entire world in terms of information storage and retrieval," said Hilmi Celik, director of the Information Center. Celik added, "Millennium was chosen by the University Information Center as a next generation system with its integrated modules, full support of the Turkish language and character set, electronic imaging capabilities and use of leading-edge technologies. We are excited to be using Java-based modules and an open-platform client-server architecture." Sabanci University, whose campus construction was completed in September 1999, lies approximately 20 miles from the center of Istanbul. Student in-take has been deliberately restricted to 253 for the first year, and the university is expected to grow by around 400 students per year until it reaches its desired capacity of 3,000 by the end of its fifth year (2004).
