Hong Kong The Innovative system has been installed in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Library since 1990, Innovative’s first outside of North America. The HKUST Library was instrumental in the introduction of Innovative’s systems to Asia and in providing Innovative with expert knowledge to assist in enhancing the system to support Chinese characters. According to Min-min Chang, HKUST’s University Librarian, “HKUST Library staff began the joint development work with Innovative to add more effective multilingual capabilities to all system modules, especially for Chinese multi-byte characters. So successful was this effort that the Innovative system came to be known throughout Asia for its superior capability to input and display Asian character sets. Currently, the HKUST Library provides several different sets of Web OPAC pages. In addition to English, we have both simplified and traditional Chinese interfaces.” Through this collaboration, HKUST became the first library in 1991 with an OPAC boasting full Chinese capability. Since then, all academic libraries in Hong Kong and many others in Asia have adopted Innovative’s library automation system. As in many British institutions of higher education, Learning Resources is an integrated service offering library and information services, staff development in the use of IT, teaching and learning support, as well as the production of multimedia learning materials and the print unit. The main building for Learning Resources is on the College campus, with smaller site libraries in seven hospitals where Chester College's student nurses and midwives are taught. The College library holds approximately 230,000 volumes, of which 30,000 are distributed among the hospital sites. Learning Resource's vision is to be a patron-focused state-of-the-art service which delivers information, resources, and training, enabling the students and staff of Chester College to achieve their learning and research goals. Chester College has been an Innovative partner library since 1995 and is currently in the process of implementing Millennium. "We chose Millennium because we realized that we had to move into the new technologies which are Web- and client-server based. Millennium enables us to have more functionality and gives us a more attractive interface to the system," said Christine Stockton, Director of the Chester College Learning Resources Center. Stockton added, "Our aim is to integrate traditional library services with our Web-based and electronic resources in an information environment which supports the development of our staff and students as independent and life-long learners." |
