New Westminster, BC, Canada Douglas College was established in 1970. As they celebrate their 30th anniversary, the Library also celebrates the acquisition of Innovative's Millennium system. The official system launch took place at the end of February, 2000; the Library looks forward to working with Millennium to make their information more accessible to the college community and grow into new service areas as they develop. Over 10,000 students enroll each year in credit programs at Douglas College. One of the largest community colleges in British Columbia, the College serves students from throughout the Lower Mainland and British Columbia at its campuses in New Westminster, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge. Douglas College is a newcomer to the Innovative family. Because of Y2K complications with the Library's old system, the migration had to be accomplished in an extremely compressed time frame. The implementation team at the College is extremely happy with the service they have received from Innovative, which has allowed them to complete the task in such a short time. The Library collection presently includes nearly 156,000 items housed at its three campuses. This number includes 1,310 periodical subscriptions in a variety of formats. The College's enthusiastic music students are able to make use of 2,329 music CDs, and more than half that number of scores. The audio-visual collection includes some 7,000 videotapes, and the Library will soon introduce DVD titles to the collection. Students and faculty also enjoy reciprocal borrowing from other local post-secondary institutions. The convenience offered by Millennium is particularly important in a multi-campus environment. With this system, the Library catalog will be available through the Web for the first time. This gives the Library the ability to offer access to electronic materials to their patrons around the campus, and off-site. Innovative's Web OPAC is especially useful for their distance education programs. The Library is only beginning to appreciate the functionality available in the staff module, and its versatility for statistical reporting, budgeting, and in-house information management. They are currently engaged in the active use of the Millennium suite of products: the Web OPAC, Circulation, Serials, Cataloging, Acquisitions, A/V Bookings, Web Access Management, and various system functions. |
